Transformers DS review at Cubed3.

"Transformers: Autobots and Transformers: Decepticons are both DS titles based on the recent feature-length Transformers film which hit the UK in July, earlier this year. Whilst the former challenges players to defend the Earth and all its inhabitants, the latter allows them cause as must devastation as possible. Whilst the two games are almost identical, we’ll be taking a look at the Autobots iteration today."

Transformers DS review at Nintendo World Report.

"I’m a huge fan of Transformers. I have been ever since I was a little guy waging wars across the bedroom floor with my Transformer toys. In the end, Optimus Prime and the Autobots always won, but Megatron would escape by the rust on his mechanical foot, vowing to fight another day. That war ended when I became a young adult, and now the Transformers dwell in my parent’s house for the next generation of nieces and nephews to resurrect the great battles of old. I went and saw the Transformers movie and it blew me away. It was fantastic. Yes, this not a review about the movie, so I’ll leave it at that, but it is relevant I assure you, because with a movie, comes the game. The rule of thumb is also that, more times than not, the games are absolutely horrible. Is this the case with Transformers DS? Let's see."

Transformers DS review at Vooks.

"Transformers were, quite simply, my favourite toys as a child. As time went on and ‘maturity’ began to take over, the adoration I had for the robots in disguise slowly decreased, and I eventually traded my toys for an original GBA and Advance Wars. Now, with the successful (and quite awesome) live action movie still raking in the big bucks at cinemas, the two hobbies have crossed paths in the form of Transformers - Autobots for Nintendo DS (among countless other systems). Knowing what we all know about movie tie-ins, hopes weren’t exactly high – but given the obvious polish afforded to the movie, maybe some of it was carried over to the game."

Transformers DS review at Aussie-Nintendo.

"By now, most of you reading this would have watched the movie at least once. Long time fans of the cartoon series, myself included, have been waiting eons for a live action movie, and what we have showing in the cinemas now is surely what we were waiting for. So how do the video game tie-ins stack up?

Transformers video games have been around since the 1980's. 1UP has an interesting article about these called "Robots in Disgust". We have 2 separate games on the DS; Transformers: Autobots and Transformers: Decepticons. Each one has their own playable characters and loosely follows the movie's storyline."

Transformers DS review at 1-up.

"Here we have the best game based on the Transformers movie, though that's not saying a whole lot. Transformers: Autobots and Transformers: Decepticons are basically the same type of game found on all the consoles and the PSP. You roam around a few largeish levels looking for your next mission, doing the odd side quest, and bringing mass amounts of pain to your foes.

So far, the DS games are no better than their console/PSP counterparts."

Transformers DS review at Gamespy.

"As a big Transformers nerd, I was pretty disappointed by the recent console game based on Michael Bay's hit movie about the robots in disguise. I was even more disappointed by the PSP version, so I must admit that I didn't have a whole lot of faith in how the DS Transformers titles would turn out. My fears were compounded by the fact that Activision didn't even send out any review copies of the game, which is never a good sign in this business."

Transformers DS review at Pocketgamer.co.uk.

"Like the mechanical monstrosities themselves, the DS game based on the Transformers film seems to come out of nowhere. First impressions are it's likely to be just another movie blockbuster tie-in, albeit one that comes in two possible flavours: you can either buy Autobots or Decepticons versions.

Get into the game, however, and it's not long before its true colours swing into view – overall, the package is almost as shiny as Optimus Prime's paint job.

Something that doesn't matter much in a game like this is the story. In the case of Transformers: Autobots (which is the version we reviewed), you take control of several Autobots — ranging from Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Ironhide and Ratchet, as well as your default bot — as they attempt to stop their nemeses, the Decepticons, from destroying Earth. Obviously, if you buy the Decepticons version, the roles are reversed. As Barricade, Brawl, Blackout, Starscream, Megatron and friends, your task is to destroy the Blue Planet."

Transformers DS review at Gamespot.

"Transformers: Autobots and Transformers: Decepticons are two sides of the same coin. Both games tell the same general story, they both share the same environments, and they both let you run amok as a robot that can transform into various vehicles. The main thing distinguishing the two versions is that you fight as a heroic Autobot in one and an evil Decepticon in the other. Regardless of which version you choose to bring home, you'll probably get a kick out of beating up opposing robots and exploring the huge 3D environments incognito as a car, helicopter, or some other Earthly conveyance. The bad news is that the uninspiring story missions and brief overall length pretty much guarantee you'll be done with the game for good in six hours or less."

Transformers: Decepticons review at IGN

"As of this writing we're still waiting for giant, transformable robots to finally blast onto the big screen thanks to Michael Bay and his unique, over-the-top, almost videogame-like production style. But Activision's ready to give us our giant robots now, in videogame form. Vicarious Visions, the team that wowed us with the DS version of Spider-Man 3 -- easily the best of the versions released -- brings us its portable take on the Michael Bay flick. At the very least, the DS versions can arguably be considered the best of the Transformers bunch, but that doesn't let them off the hook -- it's got its moments but it's not a "great" DS experience."

Transformers: Autobots review at GameAlmighty.

"It’s summer again, and that means one of a few things around here at Almighty HQ. First of all, I need to get a fan for my desk because this killer dual-core SLI PC is making my desk a lot hotter than I’d like right now. However, in a more relevant-to-our-situation occurrence, there’s about to be a slew of movies unleashed upon the American public, and that by extension means it’s movie-game season again. The latest offering in this year’s line of cinema-inspired games is Transformers: The Game. There are actually 4 distinct versions of this game, so let’s make it clear that this review is for the DS game Transformers: Autobots."

Transformers DS preview at GameAlmighty.

"The Transformers are rolling out to your next-gen consoles, and it looks to be more than meets the eye. The game has been in development for over 20 months, and the team has been working closely with the minds behind the movie. Featuring voice talent, sound effects and even the character models found in the film, this game is pretty much guaranteed to satisfy fans of the license.

There are 3 distinct versions of this game that all share a similar focus – providing action packed robot destruction action. The next-gen versions of the game (PS3, 360 and Wii) are all the same core game with a few minor differences. As the game starts, players will have to choose whether they want to be good or evil, and side with either the Decepticons or Autobots. The Autobots story will closely follow the plot of the movie while at the same time providing backstory and details that you won’t see on the silver screen. The Decepticon story, however, is a wholly different animal. It’s a sort of “what if” outing that’ll sometimes put you on the opposite side of a fight that you’d be playing as the Autobots. That’s not to say that it’s the same game from two perspectives, however – you should expect each to play like an independent story experience. Blur Studios has created a unique intro and closing movie for each campaign, and from what I’ve seen these alone may be worth the price of admission."

Transformers hands-on at Gamespot.

"The hype machine is running at full tilt for the upcoming July 4 release of the Transformers film, Michael Bay's big action-movie reimagining of the classic giant-robot cartoon and toy franchises that many adult gamers came to love in their halcyon youth. It's not surprising--given the affection many such fans hold for the property--that excitement for the movie is running high right now. (We personally witnessed applause for the latest Transformers trailer on a recent theatrical visit.) It's also no surprise that Activision, along with developers Traveller's Tales, Savage, and Vicarious Visions, are prepping licensed games that tie into the movie for every conceivable platform. We recently got to try out almost all of them, including versions on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, the Wii, the PSP, and one of the two games coming out for the DS."

Transformers DS hands-on at IGN.

"Activision last week held an event in Santa Monica for press to get their paws on the various renditions of its upcoming Transformers game...the one based upon the July 4th Michael Bay flick. The main focus of this event was to demonstrate the impressive console version, but the publisher invited along Vicarious Visions to show off the two versions it has created for the Nintendo DS system."

Transformers DS preview at NintendoWorldReport.

"The Nintendo DS adaptation of the Transformers movie is quite different from the console games. For one thing, there are two different versions of the DS game – one for Autobots and the other for Decepticons. Each one has different playable characters, a somewhat different story, and one exclusive level. Both versions are open world games with mission-based campaigns, which is a similar game design to the console versions, but this will be one of the first games to attempt such a thing on the DS platform."
