"After the lack of innovation of Harvest Moon DS and the futuristic but out of tune innovation of Innocent Life, Natsume's farming simulation series has finally found its footing on handheld consoles with Rune Factory. This latest attempt to bring innovation to a too-familiar series has produced an interesting hybrid that mixes the old farming system with real-time battles and much more exploration than in the past. Even if it still suffers with a defective control system that doesn't take full advantage of the DS' touch-screen capabilities, Rune Factory delivers a sense of freshness that is worth checking out."

"The name pretty much says it all. Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon takes the well-established farmlife formula of Natsume's Harvest Moon games and transplants it into the type of baroque fantasy world found commonly in Japanese RPGs, complete with an amnesiac protagonist and plenty of dungeon-crawling. The introduction of combat to Rune Factory is a significant one, and though it's a big change of pace from the farming, fishing, and family-building that have been at the heart of the Harvest Moon games, it avoids feeling tacked-on. Still, this is all mostly for the sake of established Harvest Moon fans, and the overall pace of the action in Rune Factory doesn't feel much different from its predecessors."

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon review at IGN.

"Despite its GBA success, Harvest Moon hasn't had the greatest start on DS. The original title released back in September of 2006 was hardly what you'd call a true DS vision, having nearly identical assets as its GBA predecessors, and adding clunky touch control on top of a sloppy interface. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the franchise, Natsume has reinvented the world of Harvest Moon in Rune Factory, a half farming, half dungeon-crawling adventure that pairs classic gameplay with the action of something like Children of Mana. And while last year's effort was anything but a worthy DS debut (if you remember, we advised readers to pick up the old GBA game and save their cash of Rune Factory's 2007 release), Rune Factory is quite a different experience, as it has become one of the most engaging and entertaining Harvest Moon titles since series birth."

According to representatives, if Harvest Moon is Three's Company, then Rune Factory is more like The Ropers. Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon preview at IGN.

"There are no fewer than five Harvest Moon games at this year's E3. I kid you not people, Natsume is milking this cow (sometimes literally!) for all it is worth. In the Natsume room, if I spin in a circle, I can see a Harvest Moon puzzle game, a Harvest Moon game that set's in the future, even a Harvest Moon with real hoe action via the Wii controller! But I settled on the new Harvest Moon game for the Nintendo DS: Rune Factory."
