"Race Driver: Create & Race is the latest addition to Codemasters' library of racing games. This time, the makers of TOCA Race Driver and Colin McRae Rally have decided to transfer their expertise to the Nintendo DS, and have done so in fine fashion. It isn't perfect, but Race Driver: Create & Race gives portable gamers a very fun and lengthy challenge with a vast amount of extras thrown in."

"Setting out on an epic quest to slay monsters while on the bus to work? Makes sense. Quizzing your brain with point-and-click mysteries while ignoring a boring meeting? Totally with you there. But booting up your portable system of choice to play a serious racing game? Some things just don't make sense for on-the-go gaming, even though it's hard to fault the developers behind Race Driver: Create & Race for giving it such a good try."

"This great racing game has high levels of content, customization and challenges. Players can shift through several different modes including the single player tours, multiplayer and online. The solid driving mechanics/navigation and some trial and error shortcuts can help players advance through goals quickly. The braking and acceleration works well with steady bursts on the buttons in most situations."

"It can usually be attributed to smaller budgets for handheld productions: unless it's a game produced by the Mighty Nintendo, Nintendo DS games generally don't get nearly the same development attention as console products tend to. Take, for example, racing games. The system's got plenty of them, including the outstanding Mario Kart DS, but on a third-party level most are pale shadows to their console partners; most companies aren't really willing to take the risk on an original IP anyway, instead "porting" to the current generation of whatever racing game they're shipping on console."

"Racing games on the Nintendo DS have been hit-and-miss. Most of them haven't been much to get excited about, but the handheld has seen its share of good racers. Thanks to Codemasters' Race Driver: Create & Race, you can add another one to the "good" category. The game is chock-full of content, and most importantly, it's fun."

"Codemasters’ Race Driver: Create and Race has just been released on the Nintendo DS and to celebrate one of the best racing games of the moment, Cubed³ caught up with the Glaswegian team behind the project, Firebrand Games, to find out more about the game and what makes their game so much better than the rest of the competition."

"Driving games are like wasps. You can go for ages without seeing one, and then a thousand million turn up at once. That's how it feels right now, anyway. The last few months have offered PGR4, Sega Rally, Juiced 2, Forza 2, DiRT, Flatout: Ultimate Carnage, while shiny new models of Need For Speed, Burnout and Gran Turismo rev their engines, and rattle their stupidly wide exhaust pipes in the garage, waiting to join the scrum. What does it take to stand out in such an unseemly morass of speeding metal?"

"Firebrand Games has been tasked with the seemingly impossible - taking one of the best racing sims out there and doing it justice on DS, a system that's renowned for its innovative approach, but not its horsepower. The solution? A Mixture of scaled back design and innovation (track editor, anyone?). We caught up with Pete Shea, Creative Director at Firebrand Games to find out a little more."

"Somehow, building sporting venues is harder than it seems. Just thinking about how long it took to finish the new Wembley Stadium is already giving London council tax payers butterflies about the 2012 Olympics. As for the Silverstone racing circuit, despite Lewis Hamilton, we all know F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has being try to dump it for more exotic (and advertising-friendly) locations for years."

"The Race Driver series has a massive following now thanks to Codemasters’ continued efforts to keep the standards so considerably high. But so far Nintendo fans have not really been treated to anything special in the racing stakes. However, now the Nintendo DS is getting its first taste of the TOCA action, courtesy of Scottish team ‘Firebrand Games’. Can the team use its past experience and expertise in the racing field to bring the ultimate racing game to the Nintendo DS. And does it live up to the strong brand name? Well, that is what we are about to find out…"

"Right out of the box, Race Driver: Create and Race has fairly simple controls and not a whole lot of variety to catch the eye.
However, once you get into the track creation mode and experience the wide variety of cars and race modes, this racing sim transforms into a high quality game with incredible depth."

"Despite the fact that DS was launched back in 2005, the number of decent racing games can be counted on one hand. In fact, you could pretty much count them on one finger because, so far, Mario Kart DS has been the only must-have racer on the handheld. But now, Codemasters is zipping to the starting grid with Race Driver: Create & Race - a driving title that's like nothing else on DS. You see, instead of offering arcade action, Create & Race is a far more sober simulation experience that swaps red shells for real-life tracks and moustachioed plumbers for hardcore driving challenges."

"The Nintendo DS isn't exactly known for its realistic racing games. It has some great racing games (Mario Kart DS still being the king), just not realistic ones. Small wonder, really. The hardware just isn't suited to pumping out polygonal environments, let alone realistic handling and AI. So while the PSP has had three V8 Supercars (or Race Driver, if you're not Australian) outings, this is the first time the series is kicking it dual screens style. Sadly, after a couple of hours with a near-final build of the game, we're far from convinced that this is going to be the game to do simulation racing well on the DS. That said, there's still a fair bit to like about Create & Race."
