Luminator preview at Cubed3.

"Many people love Q Entertainment’s Meteos and Lumines, both superb puzzle games that hit the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, respectively. Now, though, a game that plays quite similarly to the latter title on PSP is about to make its way onto the DS under the name ‘Luminator’ from developer bhv Software and publisher Xider Gamers (who is also bringing the port of PC adventure Ankh to DS later this year). But with so many top quality puzzle games already on the DS, such as the amazing Puzzle League and Picross, how well does it play and is it worthy of your attention?"

Luminator hands-on at Pocketgamer.co.uk.

"When it comes to artefacts like books and films, copyright can be a difficult issue to sort out. After all, there are only supposed to be seven distinct plots in the world, so there's always scope for some crossover. But for forms such as music – Avril Lavigne and The Rubinoos' current Girlfriend/Boyfriend spat springs to mind – or games, however, inspiration is typically easier to spot.

Still, calling this block manipulation game Luminator DS suggests that developer Denaris and publisher Xider are keener to flaunt any similarity to existing products for marketing purposes, rather than trying to hide it."

Luminator press released updated.

XIDER Games will be making its first venture into the Nintendo DS format with Luminator DS, a puzzle-strategy game with a modern soundtrack and updated Tetris-style play which will banish your Rubik’s Cube to the attic permanently.

Construction combos are needed as the player aims to turn their building blocks into valuable points. There are 15 different soundtracks to quicken the pulse with music developing from a casual beat to a techno trance as the bricks fall faster. Players can test their structural creativity on 16 different backgrounds at different difficulty levels to make sure that no gamer’s experience is ever the same.

Luminator DS offers the player a constantly evolving challenge with two difficulty levels in ‘normal mode’ and three in ‘puzzle mode’, plus music to add tension and enhance enjoyment. It is an addictive game that will test, tease and, if the player is good enough, eventually satisfy.

This is the latest addition to XIDER’s rapidly expanding games portfolio already including popular PC games Ankh: Heart of Osiris, the Bone episodes and Bad Mojo.

Luminator announced for DS.

Luminator is a brand new puzzle game for the Nintendo DS. It will be released in Europe in the 3rd quarter. While no screenshots or media have been shown, we do have the following facts:

* 15 background designs
* 15 stylish soundtracks in CD quality
* Endless mode
* Puzzle mode with different time presets
* Multiplayer mode to play on two Nintendo DS consoles
* Multiple difficulty levels

The game works by matching a 2x2 sqaure of the same colour that gets removed. This is sounding quite familiar, Lumines anyone? We'll have to make do with this till hopefully a proper Lumines makes its way to the Nintendo DS some day.
