"Time Ace is one of Konami’s new franchises for the Nintendo DS, and it is a good example of how good ideas cannot work without good execution. Developed by Trainwreck, Time Ace is a shooter/flight simulator that tells the story about a scientist called Dr. Hugo Clock, who developed a time machine capable of flying around several historical eras. Unfortunately, the scientist (that’s you) discovers that his assistant Dr. Klaus Scythe turns out to be a very capable thief. He steals the time machine to further his plan for world domination. Because Clock’s plan was to stop World War I, it forces him to grab his old plane (which also has time traveling powers) and fix things once and for all."

"Thanks to Xbox Live Arcade and the DS game Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits, modern-day gamers are getting a chance to get reacquainted with Konami's arcade classic Time Pilot. Konami's new DS title, Time Ace, is sort of a spiritual sequel to the retro game, even if the company is quick to claim that the two games are unrelated (despite the similar name and premise)."

"Going by the name, the title, and the game's situations, it's almost as if Time Ace was intended to be a remake of Konami's classic arcade shooter Time Pilot, and that somewhere down the line the name got changed so as not to sully what reputation the retro branding has left in the industry. Time Ace has all of the elements of a good game, but unfortunately it just doesn't end up becoming one -- it's a somewhat rushed and restrictive action title that just doesn't have the spark needed for original IPs to gain that needed notice on the Nintendo DS."

"If you were an expert pilot who could travel through time, would you A) take over the world B) defend it from the kinds of people who would take over the world or C) fly back to the 80's and get rich betting on sports? In Time Ace, a new Konami rail shooter for the Nintendo DS, the decision is made for you. Instead of seizing a millennium's worth of royal rights or following in the fat footsteps of Biff Tannen, you thwart the anachronistic schemes of the evil Dr. Scythe as the scruffy Dr. Clock and, ultimately, save time as you know it. It's kind of ironic. After all, as you're saving time in the game, you're killing it at a bus stop or in a line and probably having a decent bit of fun. Unfortunately, your intrepid hero is so capable, he defeats Scythe in a measly few hours. Talk about a brief history of time. By the same token, this isn't an amazing journey back to the future. Time Ace has its share of bogies, such as rather poor graphics, funky mechanics, and a dumb plot to name a few, but at least it comes with a budget price tag."

"As an avowed and unapologetic fan of the ancient arcade game Time Pilot, I was beside myself with unrestrained joy at the prospect of reviewing Time Ace. That may be overstating it, but I was indeed looking forward to it. I figured it would be a sequel of sorts, considering it was published by Konami and it had the word 'Time' in the title and appeared focused on air combat. The prospect of having an updated Time Pilot for my DS was awesome. Unfortunately, Time Ace has little, if anything, to do with the beloved relic of similar name."

"Those guys over at Konami happen to have one of the greatest and most varied back catalogs of all the main publishers, so it comes as no surprise to find them occasionally raiding the archives and offering up new takes on classic franchises. One of Konami's first arcade hits was a shoot em up by the name of Time Pilot. A multi directionally scrolling game where you piloted a variety of flying craft in different time periods, blasting away at time traveling bad guys hell bent on mucking up the history, making the future belong to them!"
