"Game publishers can be funny, sometimes. They're more than happy to churn out sequel after sequel to hit games, but they're awfully coy about numbering them -- almost as if they're ashamed of their opportunistic franchise-milking. Tomb Raider IV? No, it was "The Last Revelation." Mega Man 13? Nope -- "Mega Man Legends." And although we've killed Dracula about a dozen times since Super Castlevania IV, we're still waiting on Castlevania 5.

So when a publisher drops the subtitles and gets back to simple numbers, it's hard not to take notice. It's a statement -- one that says, "Those other games were just distractions; this is the true sequel." Sometimes, it backfires; as in Dawn of Mana, which in Japan is called Seiken Densetsu 4 -- a fact that makes its wanton desecration of the Mana series all the more painful. And let's not even dwell on 1994's inexplicable Pac-Man 2."
